Then you're doing it wrong! You can check the help to see exactly how some of the recipes are made.
For axes specifically, you need 2 sticks (one on bottom, one on top of the bottom one), and 3 other resources. The other resources may be wood planks, stone, iron, gold, or diamond. The first resource is right above the top stick. Then the next one is to the right of the last resource. Then the last one is to the right of the middle stick. It's easier to see than to explain, obviously xD
